[ EDITOR'S NOTE ]

The discussion below concerns itself in detail with the actual 'head count' for Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria Virginia, Class of 1960 classmates. Since we also like to keep track of sister classes on either side of us (both as a courtesy as well as for possible multi-class reunion invitations), we would also like to track from 1955 through 1965 as well. If ANYONE has documentation of any kind for those class graduation years, whether official or not (we'll take reunion notes as well!), please let us know. Any copy of an original document or note will do.

Examples are (but surely not limited to) official CLs (commencement list), LWTs (Last Will and Testament) [and btw, we would love to post class CLs and LWTs on this site], reunion attendance (with missing lists!), even your personal contact notes if that is OK with you.

We know it is totally unreasonable to ask, but since we are desperate, here goes. If ANYONE still has their MVHS 'Surveyor' yearbooks handy, you COULD take pains to make classmate / schoolmate list(s) from the main class pictures section, as well as the underclass sections!

Whatever you can do, we will REALLY appreciate it. Please arrange to mail or email scans to the Site Guy. Thanks!!!

In addition to combining the 'official' lists with each other (not one of which agrees exactly with any other), for the sake of serving this sites' policy of inclusivity, we also add in the 'trackers' to the graduation lists. Trackers are students who were moving along with a specific class but who left, mostly early, and usually due to family moves, before they could actually graduate at MVHS with their class. Large numbers were transfered out to other high schools in the surrounding area due to the overcrowding resulting from the post war 'boomers'. Others, being part of military families stationed at nearby Fort Belvoir, moved away. Some also graduated late for various reasons.

As an example, for the Class of 1960, we added the juniors from the 1959 yearbook who did not appear for our senior class - almost 50 that we know of. Then we reached back further to add the sophomores from 1958 for the same reason - almost another 70 more. All are 1960 trackers; circumstances prevented many from 'normal' graduation at MVHS. We stopped there; adding in 1957 freshmen and 1956 eighth graders seems too far afield, although in principal they could be counted up at some future time. I ain't doin' it!
We have done the same thing for all years for which we have Surveyor data to refer to.

We have been involved in a search effort to locate / relocate! as many 'lost' classmates as possible. While our 'official' head count varies as new information comes in, here are the numbers as we currently know them.

We count 303 trackers for the entire Class of 1960, broken down as per the following:

Actual 1960 graduates - 173 [ From the official Commencement List ]

plus 1960 'trackers':
Left early in 1958 - 69
Left early in 1959 - 49
Left late in 1961 - 10
Left late in 1962 - 2

giving 130 more which totals to 303

(Known) Deceased - 40

Which brings our putatively living total to 263, of which we have re-established contact with 138, which leaves 125 yet to be located.

Similar figures have been totalled for some of our sister classes. While the data is still incomplete, approximate totals are:

GENERAL DISCUSSION
Will the real 1960 head count please stand up?

Confusion reigns over the official head count of the graduating Class of 1960. We have headaches. One would think getting a simple head count would be easy, but has proven anything but straightforward. We fine-tune our data as soon as we get wind of discrepancies, but it seems there is always another glitch to fix! Some call our concern with accuracy professional; others, picky; others obsessive; we call it (attempted) clarity.

For purposes of the 40th reunion in 2000, we did not have access to any official FCPS documents, so a list (which we continued to use for our 50th reunion in 2010) was compiled then by combining five sources.

1. The list of entries in the 1960 LWT (Last Will and Testament), indicating 142 classmates; totally unsatisfactory.

2. The list of seniors with personal class pictures in the 1960 'Surveyor' yearbook, indicating 175.

3. An 'unofficial?' commencement list, indicating 176, now thought to be minus approximately 13.
[You would think #2 and #3 would be close, yet all three sources together yield 190 classmates and still isn't exactly correct!]

4. Two lists we cobbled together from lists supplied to us by the 1985 25th Reunion Committee:

A. The Attendee list, indicating 66, and

B. The 'Missing' list, indicating 110, for a total of 176, all still very unsatisfactory.

5. A VERY unofficial list, given to us so long ago we have lost track of where it came from, purporting to indicate about 49 juniors in the 1959 'Surveyor' who were on track to graduate with us, but left early for some reason - we call this our LE (Left Early) list.
[ Note: for 2010, we had access to a few more yearbooks, which indicated 69 left in 1958 and 12 left later than 1960 ]

We couldn't then and can't now make any two lists 'jive', and that leaves nagging questions.

Since 2000, we have been in contact with the Fairfax County Documents Division, which among other things keeps raw records for the public school system. The student lists available from this source has helped enormously, especially with our 'disappeared ones'.

Various others have made themselves known on other reunion-oriented websites, such as http://www.mvgrads.com and http://www.classmates.com. However, we believe that some of them have mis-identified their class affiliation, creating additional head count confusion.

Some, having left early because of a family move, perhaps after their junior year in 1959, count themselves as the Class of 1959. We opine that counting that way is not accurate; besides, it creates additional confusion for the 1959 head count as well. Others have left reunion site residues that are simply impossible to decipher; then they let their entries decay for years, which makes these classmates unlocatable and impossible to contact for any kind of clarification.

Still other classmates have, apparently because they attended high school through a range of several years, or perhaps because they just want to be found more often, registered as having graduated from every one of those years. If all classmates / schoolmates did that, the total headcount for any one graduation year would quadruple!

It is possible, due to unusual circumstances, to encounter an occasional legitimate double head count across multiple class graduating years. A few classmates can consider themselves as legitimately countable members of more than one class graduation year. We know of cases where classmates have tracked through with their normal class clear into their junior year. Due to unforseen family or health issues, they were forced to drop out part way through their tracking year, which prevented 'normal' graduation, then resumed their career by starting that partial year over again the following September and proceed through and graduate with the oncoming class. This scenario qualifies them to claim both graduating years as their own; one because that was their normal track, the next because it was their actual graduation year.

For purposes of clarity, the guiding philosophy of this site is one of inclusivity rather than exclusivity. If a classmate shared all or any part of their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years with a specific tracking year at Mount Vernon, then they shared that specific tracking year with us and are counted as a legimate member of that specific class. Even if classmates were with us for a partial year, and perhaps many of us may not remember them, those classmates could well have been the best friends during that brief time of some of us, and deserve to be welcomed.

In other words, ALL CLASSMATES WHO EITHER DID OR WOULD HAVE GRADUATED WITH US if events hadn't overtaken them, comprise by definition the Class of 19nn.

However, we distinguish those who officially graduated (as determined by our combined source documents) from those who weren't able to share graduation day with us. We use a special codes, LE/nn and LL/nn, indicating they left early or left late and the last whole or partial year they completed.

Keeping data current for several hundred classmates can sometimes result in some rather terrific boo-boos, so we encourage ALL who visit here to check their data entries in their appropriate year range under our Site Index. If it ain't so, * PLEASE * say so (preferably by email) and we will fix it ASAP! - THANKS!

CONFLICTS WITH OTHER WEB SITES

In our accelerating desperation to locate missing classmates ASAP, we regularly check out the registries of a few of the other reunion-oriented websites, notably http://www.mvgrads.com and http://www.classmates.com.

Below we have listed people who have identified themselves on Classmates with 1960 as their last attendance year, not necessarily implying graduation, but we have no independent verification of this - no CP, no LWT, no CL.

If you find your name listed below or can advise us of how to contact or verify (read resolve our confusion), please contact us.
